Our Mines & Brands

R&G is the 75% owner and operator of both the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia and in Mozambique.

We work with the local partners who own the remaining 25%

in both nations.

We partner with the Zambian government through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). For MRM, we work with local companys.

We work collaboratively with the governments and local communities around our mines to identify projects that enhance the lives of the local community with a focus on health, education and livelihoods as well as supporting Africa’s rich wildlife through conservation.

In addition to expanding our footprint in and around the mines, we have undertaken exploratory work in Ethiopia, which we hope to resume. We also see Madagascar as an exciting coloured gem province, but operations will be dependent on the country’s political landscape.

How Are our gemstone
mined?

Unearthing precious gemstones is a delicate business. Gemstones are small, hard to find and, in the case of emeralds, easily damaged. Despite significant advancements in the methods used, many stages are still carried out by hand.

Although our mining process varies slightly from emeralds to rubies, they are both carried out in open pits, without tunnels and only the African sky overhead. This approach is far safer for our team.

In Zambiaemeralds are found underground in hard rock. In our biggest pit, the emeralds are recovered around 140m deep. The mining process involves blasting away waste rock, experts extract emeralds from within the lower-level hard rock with chisels, and then these gemstones are taken to a washing and sorting plant.

In Mozambiquerubies are found in loose, muddy gravel, relatively close to the surface. The ruby-bearing gravel is scooped up and washed thoroughly, after which the gravel is sorted.

Gemstones are sorted in a sort house, Here the emeralds and rubies are graded using proprietary grading system. The rough emeralds and rubies are then offered at private auctions to vetted partners with proceeds fully repatriated to the host nation.

As a leader in the coloured gemstone industry, we embrace innovation in exploration and mining and are committed to sustainability. By combining our knowledge with cutting-edge technology and the most innovative techniques, we’re able to produce a consistent supply of gemstones, while always looking to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment.
